ARAPAHOE COUNTY - A high school pastor at Greenwood Community Church admitted to being sexually involved with a 16-year-old girl and surrendered to deputies Tuesday, investigators said.
Donald Richard Ryan, 33, said he had been counseling the teenager for the past 2 1/2 years, according to the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office.

Ryan allegedly told investigators that the two shared inappropriate telephone text messages and e-mails that led to sexual contact.

Ryan, of Highlands Ranch, was arrested for investigation of charges of sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust and unlawful sexual contact. He could face up to 12 years in prison if convicted of the sexual assault charge.

Ryan was being held on $50,000 bail.

Greenwood Community Church, 5600 E. Belleview Ave., is part of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church.

Ryan confessed about the sexual relationship to church leaders Tuesday, said Bob Greene, the church's business administrator, in a written statement. The church then contacted police.

Ryan has been removed from the pastoral staff. He had been working at the church for the past two years, Greene said.

The teenage girl is "not too well," sheriff's Capt. Brice Moomaw said.

Ryan is scheduled to appear in court Nov. 20.
